In 2002, The European Parliament approved a new .eu domain name suffix. The decision was made by ministers of the 15 member states at a conference in northern Spain.
The domain registration will be run by a private sector organisation. Tasks facing the new organisation include cyber squatting and cross boarder dispute resolution.

The .eu domain is not intended to replace existing domains like .co.uk and .de, but to act as an alternative. It is not yet clear how popular .eu will become. Pan European domains names are expected to go on sale sometime in 2005.
