Self Destructing Email
The new Office 2003 from Microsoft will allow users to "time stamp" emails, instructing them to be deleted on a set date. Known as Information Rights Management, the development is designed to improve security and avoid potentially embarrassing messages lingering around.
Users will also be able to restrict who is allowed to read an e-mail, prevent recipients from forwarding messages and messages being printed. The new software could potentially be used to prevent leaks of sensitive information. However, companies installing the utilising the new technology may run in to trouble. In the United States, destroying emails is a federal offence, similar to shredding documents.
Office 2003 also includes new software intended to protect confidential information held in Excel or Word programmes.
